How to apply for accommodation
Your step-by-step guide to finding your new home at Sussex.
Before you apply
Before you begin your application, check whether you're eligible for guaranteed University accommodation in line with your course, level and fee status.
-
Receive your housing application details
From March onwards, we'll send information to our UCAS, Masters and PhD offer-holders that explains how to access our housing application portal.
If you're joining us through Clearing, you'll recieve a link to apply for accommodation once you've accepted your offer through UCAS Hub.
-
Research your options
Explore our campus residences to find the best option for you. You can check out useful information on our website, and even visit in person during an Open Day housing tour.
Our accommodation is generally mixed-gender, and shared by both international and UK students. As part of your application, you can request to:
- live with mature students
- apply for a quiet area
- live in single-gender accommodation.
While we can’t guarantee specific requests, we’ll always do our best to match your preferences.
If you have a child or other dependents who intend to live with you, you’ll need to find suitable rental accommodation in the instead.
If you’re going to be under 18 years of age after the September move-in date, you’ll be required to provide details of a parent or guardian based in the UK. We’ll ensure you’re housed in campus residences that are close to the 24-hour security office or have a 24-hour reception.
-
Outline your health requirements or adjustments
We’re here to help you feel at home. We offer a range of accessible options to suit different needs – from wheelchair access to rooms adapted for specific requirements including hearing or visual impairments.
If you have health requirements or would benefit from adjustments, let us know via your housing application as early as possible. We’ll always do our best to meet reasonable requests, depending on availability.
You're also welcome to share if you're considering transitioning or have recently transitioned gender, and we’ll direct you to relevant sources of support.
-
Choose your preferences
When you apply for housing, you’ll need to list at least seven options in order of preference.
While we can’t guarantee that you’ll be matched to a specific choice, we’ll do our best to allocate you to one of your top preferred options.
Changing rooms may be possible after you’ve moved in using our ‘swap list’, which opens one week after Arrivals Weekend.
-
Submit your application
You must submit your application by midnight on 31 July to be guaranteed campus accommodation for September.
Check if you’re eligible for our accommodation guarantee.
Along with selecting your preferred housing options, you'll also be required to provide specific disclosures where relevant - further information will be detailed in your email.
If you're joining us through Clearing, you should apply for accommodation as soon as you can after confirming your offer through the UCAS Hub. You will be guaranteed accommodation if you accept a place within 48 hours of receiving your offer and apply for housing by 5pm on Tuesday 19 August.
International Masters students
If you’re an international Masters student, you’ll also need to pay your tuition fee deposit to receive your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Once your CAS has been issued, we can allocate your accommodation, so try to pay as soon as you can.
Don't worry if you haven’t paid your tuition fee deposit by 1 August - as long as you meet our eligibility criteria, you'll still be guaranteed accommodation if you submit your housing application by 31 July.
-
Receive and accept your offer
Between July and September, you’ll receive an email that states your:
- housing offer
- tenancy start date
- Accommodation Handbook.
You must accept your housing offer within two days of the email being sent, or your offer may be cancelled.
