Autumn and spring teaching
On this module, you’ll join a practice group relevant to your placement, with some workshop-based learning.
Topics include:
- theory, concepts and knowledge that inform assessment, planning, intervention and review in social work practice
- reflection on personal experience and empirical research to contribute to social work’s development
- learning the observation skills needed for effective communication with people who use services
- the disputed and vague ethics of social work, and their dynamics of power and discrimination
- developing an understanding of a range of methods and approaches in professional modern practice.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 101 hours of contact time and about 199 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
