Research Methods and Dissertation (877L5)

On this module, you’ll explore research-mindedness in social work. You’ll:
- research evidence-based practice
- plan a research proposal which includes rapid evidence review methods
- gain guidance and personal support during your dissertation.
By the end of the module, you’ll understand:
- research-mindedness, research methods and theory
- how to explore and analyse research methods
- ethical issues in social work research and how to resolve them
- how to design a research proposal that guides your dissertation
- how to use review methods
- rapid evidence review
- how to produce quality data reports and research questions
- how to reach conclusions which display good judgement, quality and relevant evidence, and work in practice and policy.
You’ll choose your own dissertation topic, supported by workshops and supervision.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 600 hours of work. This breaks down into about 2 hours of contact time and about 598 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We鈥檙e planning to run these modules in the academic year 2025/26.
