Autumn and spring teaching
On this module, you’ll explore the modern social work role.
Focusing on psychosocial and ecological perspectives, you’ll consider:
- how identity is formed for people who use services
- the relationship between this and environments of difficulty
- your self-awareness
- the ways you can build effective relationships with people who use services
- a strengths-based approach to assess needs and enact change in different situations
- the nature and role of modern social work, including power structures, oppression and policy
- the complex contexts of social work.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 154 hours of contact time and about 146 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
