Social Adversity, Risk and Resilience (501L5)

15 credits, Level 7 (Masters)

Autumn teaching

On this module, you’ll explore the impact of social hardship on wellbeing and relationships across lifespans in different families and cultures.

You’ll explore the experiences, causes and consequences of social hardship within wider culture, including:

  • relationships of inequality and poverty
  • neglect and abuse within parenting, caregiving and other relationships
  • violence
  • substance abuse
  • other forms of oppression and discrimination that:
    • harm
    • subordinate
    • marginalise
    • undermine human rights, social citizenship and wellbeing.

Impacts of these hardships can include mental and physical health, wellbeing and opportunity. You’ll cover ways to reduce these impacts, enhance child and adult safeguarding, and maximise life opportunities – efforts that are key in the modern social work practice.
