On this module, you’ll explore the main approaches to criminological theory and practice. Focusing on modern work, you’ll cover the period from the mid 19th-century to the present.
You’ll evaluate how these approaches apply to current debates, including:
- youth crime
- drug abuse
- defensible space and CCTV
- representation of crime in the media
- environmental crime
- corporate crime and corruption
- gangs
- terrorism and related topics.
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate the ability to evaluate critically the major schools of criminological thought.
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the social, political, cultural and philosophical context of criminological thought.
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the relationship between criminological thought and criminal justice policy.
- Have undertaken independent study of a criminological issue.
