Course learning outcomes

Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of concepts of mental health and mental illness for children and young People.

Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of diagnostic category systems in mental health.

Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of a range of social, medical and psychological explanatory models.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of relevant mental health policy and health and social care legislation.

Demonstrate a systematic understanding and critical awareness of mental health and education policy relevant to mental health work in educational settings.

Demonstrate a systematic understanding and critical awareness of the bidirectional links between young people’s mental health and their experiences and attainment in educational settings.

Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the educational context and critical awareness of the implications for delivering mental health promotion and intervention in educational settings.

Demonstrate a systematic understanding and critical awareness of the different levels of intervention for CYP, families and staff within educational settings, considerations for their delivery, and their relative merits and impact.

Demonstrate knowledge and competence in, gathering appropriate information in a timely manner to arrive at a theoretically underpinned, succinct and collaborative definition of the child or young person's main mental health difficulties and the impact these have on their daily living.

Demonstrate knowledge of and competence in engaging and building therapeutic alliances with children and young people, managing the emotional content of sessions and empathising with the client's perspective or world view.

Demonstrate knowledge and competence in recognition and accurate assessment of the risk posed by the child or young person to themselves or others.

Demonstrate competence in accurate recording of individual interviews, group interventions and questionnaire assessments using paper and electronic record-keeping systems.

Demonstrate knowledge and competence in recognising, assessing, formulating and developing management plans around risk to, or from, young people.

Demonstrate knowledge and competence in providing evidence-based information to support collaborative care planning with young people, their families and staff in education settings.

Demonstrate a systematic understanding and critical awareness of the barriers some young people experience in accessing mental health support, and how these might be overcome.

Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and competent delivery of evidence-informed groupwork to families of young people experiencing mental health difficulties.

Demonstrate knowledge and critical awareness of the evidence-base for structured peer support as an intervention to promote well-being and improve mental health.

Demonstrate competent delivery of a short course of Behavioural Activation

Demonstrate competent delivery of behavioural reward systems and Problem Solving

Demonstrate knowledge on the role of lapse prevention and construct a basic lapse/relapse prevention plan, if appropriate including parents and carers

Demonstrate a critical awareness of the Education Mental Health Practitioner’s role within multi-agency meetings regarding a young person’s mental health difficulties, and associated competence in preparing for and participating in meetings in a collaborative, ethical and professional manner.

Demonstrate critical awareness and competence in identifying, collating and reporting meaningful outcomes for a range of mental health interventions delivered in educational settings.

Demonstrate a critical awareness of the concept of service-user participation and co-production, and associated competence in engaging young people, their families and/or education staff in participation and co-production around mental health projects or interventions in educational settings.

Demonstrate competence in managing and prioritising care across a caseload, under close supervision.
