Module Outline
The Research Dissertation is your opportunity to gain first-hand experience of carrying out a substantial piece of original empirical research or literature review, typically under the supervision of a member of faculty. The Research Dissertation involves you designing, conducting, analysing (for empirical projects) and writing up a piece of empirical research or literature review. There is also the opportunity to use secondary data to use large datasets to answer research questions. As part of this, you will experience and solve a range of the practical, methodological, conceptual and ethical problems that are typical within the research process.

The Research Dissertation is your opportunity to gain first-hand experience of carrying out a substantial piece of original empirical research or literature review, typically under the supervision of a member of faculty. The Research Dissertation involves you designing, conducting, analysing (for empirical projects) and writing up a piece of empirical research or literature review. There is also the opportunity to use secondary data to use large datasets to answer research questions. As part of this, you will experience and solve a range of the practical, methodological, conceptual and ethical problems that are typical within the research process.
Module learning outcomes
Demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, resulting in a well-reasoned research rationale and/or literature review goals.
Consider the risks and benefits involved with the proposed research or literature review, demonstrating understanding of ethical implications and/or the practical benefits beyond academia of reviewing literature as appropriate.
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of techniques/methods/materials applicable to research/practice in the chosen area, including the strengths and limitations of each.
Evaluate critically current (and relevant past) research and advanced scholarship in the discipline.
Demonstrate originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how knowledge is disseminated, usually via the production of a report of their research activities modelled on a professional psychology journal article.
