Module Outline

The empirical project taken by students in their final year is an opportunity for students to gain first-hand experience of carrying out a piece of psychological research under the supervision of a member of faculty. The empirical project consolidates and extends the research skills acquired in students' second year and involves the conducting, analyzing and writing up of a piece of empirical research. As part of this, students will experience and solve a range of the practical, methodological, conceptual and ethical problems which are typical within the research process.

Module learning outcomes

Plan an empirical study to address a clearly defined research question

Collect data appropriate to that research question

Analyze that data using appropriate methods

Report the findings of the empirical study

Construct a full report of the research, modelled on a psychology journal article, incorporating Abstract, Acknowledgments, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion References and Appendices.
