Research Methods for Applied Psych (930C8)

Research Methods for Applied Psychologists

Module 930C8

Module details for 2025/26.

15 credits

FHEQ Level 7 (Masters)

Module Outline

The module "Research Methods in Applied Psychology" offers a comprehensive survey of the principal research methodologies and strategies prevalent in specialized applied branches of psychology, such as clinical and educational psychology. The module is crafted to accommodate students hailing from a diversity of academic backgrounds, including students with more limited prior exposure to research-focused methods. The module encompasses a broad spectrum of data analytical techniques, including some more conventional frequentist approaches, while placing a concentrated emphasis on analytic methods tailored to research designs and approaches that are commonly used in applied psychology areas. These analytical methods may include longitudinal design and data analysis, analysis of survey-style data, use and analysis of large open-access datasets, understanding, analysing, and interpreting randomized control trials, single-case designs, qualitative analysis approaches, meta-analytical techniques and systematic reviews, and so forth.
Crucially, the course delves into the theoretical and research design underpinning of the data analytical approaches, as well as the practical application of these approaches, utilizing real-world examples and analysis platforms. Pedagogically, the module mixes lectures-based delivery and smaller, in-person group practical sessions.
